Proteus Flex is the version of the Laowa Proteus 2X anamorphic series with user-interchangeable flares. Each lens has a Proteus main body and four flare modules: amber, silver, blue and the new clear flare, which produces minimal horizontal flare for a cleaner look; silver is fitted by default. The module screws onto the body and can be changed by the user in about 10 minutes, with no further optical calibration. This kit contains the 35, 60 and 100mm. The patented design, with fixed anamorphic and spherical groups and a moving front spherical element for focusing, keeps the 2x squeeze constant at every focus distance; the T2 aperture gives shallow depth of field, with sharpness and contrast high even wide open, oval bokeh and low focus breathing.

The lenses use a front anamorphic design with a squeeze held at 2x at every focus distance, so faces do not stretch ("anamorphic mumps"). On 4:3 and 6:5 sensors they give 2.66:1 or 2.4:1 after de-squeezing, with room to crop to 2.39:1. Super35+ coverage reaches 21.6 mm of sensor height, compatible with most Super35 cinema cameras including the ARRI ALEXA 35 and with some full-frame cameras; the lenses are also compatible with the Full Frame Expander. The cine housing has the same gear positions on all focal lengths, 0.8 mod gears for focus and aperture, a 300° focus throw, back focus adjustment with the lens on the camera, a 114 mm front diameter and 105 mm filter thread for common matte boxes. Each lens has the PL mount fitted, with an interchangeable EF mount and a lens support included. Full-frame coverage is possible with the 1.4x expander. This version has a metric focus scale.
