According to Laowa, the 12mm T2.9 Zero-D Cine is the widest T2.9 lens able to cover both full frame and Vista Vision, making it a wide angle suited to professional cinema cameras as well as mirrorless cameras. The image circle covers full-frame sensors (43.14 mm diagonal) as well as the Vista Vision sensors of RED Monstro and the ARRI Alexa LF (44.7 mm open gate). On Super 35 it gives an angle of view equivalent to a 17 mm. This version has the L-Mount mount and a focus scale in dual metres/feet.
Despite its extreme specifications the lens is compact: 87 mm long and 675 g, easy to use on all kinds of stabilisers including handheld gimbals. Where quality ultra-wide lenses typically show 2-4% distortion, Laowa Zero-D optics reduce it to close to zero. It focuses as close as 18 cm from the sensor (about 10 cm from the front element), allowing shallow depth of field and pleasant bokeh even with an ultra-wide angle. The cinema housing is all aluminium alloy, with standard 0.8 mod gears on focus and aperture for follow focus systems and a 270° focus throw for fine control. An adapter ring expanding the front diameter to the 114 mm matte box standard is included.
