Main features
1. Advanced technologies have made a 20mm F1.4 lens possible
Ā° The first* 20mm F1.4 lens made possible by the most advanced large-diameter aspherical lens processing technologies.
To offer an ultra-wide focal length of 20mm with an aperture of F1.4, the lens uses a double aspherical lens with a diameter of 59mm. It is very difficult to build lenses of this type, however, SIGMA has achieved the goal of an ultra-wide-angle lens that offers the great performance of the SIGMA Art line. The stunning result was achieved thanks to the most modern technologies that SIGMA has developed over the years, producing high-brightness wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle lenses. For example, milestones such as the SIGMA 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 EX DG ASPHERICAL HSM, SIGMA 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM, and SIGMA 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM/Art. Completely original products that have helped SIGMA develop the current high standards of precision and production efficiency, thanks to the high-level experience gained in their design and construction. Today, all this has made the new SIGMA 20mm F1.4 DG HSM /Art possible. Furthermore, the advanced optical construction minimizes distortions, transverse chromatic aberration, sagittal coma, and edge vignetting. This lens, which achieves the best results even at maximum aperture, can be considered rightfully the current pinnacle of the SIGMA Art line.
The lens drastically reduces chromatic aberrations, a common defect in high-brightness ultra-wide-angles. Its optical scheme includes two FLD ("F" Low Dispersion) glass lenses and five SLD (Special Low Dispersion) lenses that minimize transverse chromatic aberration, which manifests at the edges of the image. Axial chromatic aberration is also reduced to a minimum. The result is a lens that provides high-quality images in any shooting situation, without color smudges and much sharper and more contrasted.
Ā°FLD glass provides the highest level of performance.
Highly transparent to light, its refractive index and dispersion are much lower than common optical glasses. Its characteristics are similar to fluorite optical glasses, appreciated for their high abnormal dispersion. These characteristics minimize residual chromatic aberration (secondary spectrum), which cannot be corrected by common glasses and help to achieve sharp and high-contrast images.
Ā° Minimal distortions
Distortion is common in wide-angle lenses and cannot be corrected by stopping down the aperture. To reduce it, it must be considered from the beginning of the lens design. By adjusting the angle of incidence of the light rays from the first lens and optimally positioning aspherical lenses, the SIGMA 20mm F1.4 DG HSM /Art lens reduces distortions across the entire image field.
Ā° Reduced flare and ghosting
From the beginning of the design, SIGMA has aimed to reduce flare and ghosting and to create an optical scheme where incident light or even backlight have no effect. During the prototype study, SIGMA not only conducted theoretical simulations but also real photographic tests to evaluate flare and ghosting according to various criteria, to understand their cause in a large number of situations and take necessary countermeasures. The SIGMA Super Multi-Layer Coating drastically reduces flare and ghosting and allows for sharp and high-contrast images even in backlit situations.
2. Ideal lens for snapshots and more
Ā° Top-level results in the era of ultra-megapixels
In the era of analog photography, there were very few high-sensitivity films. Bright lenses, suitable for low-light shooting, were called "fast lenses". They were suitable for indoor shooting, evening, cloudy skies, and in general, all low-light situations. Thus, the SIGMA 20mm F1.4 DG HSM /Art enjoys the advantages of an ultra-wide-angle lens with minimal distortion. This makes it very suitable for landscape photography, starry skies, architecture.
In addition to getting wide-angle images where everything is in focus, it is possible to use the large maximum aperture to have images where the subject is in focus while the background offers a pleasant bokeh. Built to give its best with ultra-megapixel cameras, this high-performance lens offers incredible resolution and vividness even at its maximum aperture.
3. The Art line offers high-level artistic quality
Sigma has divided its interchangeable lenses into three lines: Contemporary, Art, and Sports. Each meets precise needs. Our Art line is designed to offer excellent optical and artistic results. It offers incredible quality that reaches the highest standards. It is perfect for landscape, portrait, still-life, close-up, and snapshot photography. It is designed to reveal the artist in the photographer. A reliable companion in all kinds of photography, the SIGMA Art line is ideal for studio and outdoor shooting, to achieve incredible shots of architecture, starry skies, and many other subjects.
4. Available metal lens cap (sold separately)
To achieve the best external finish of the lens, the LC907-02 metal lens cap is available. Made of the same material as the barrel, this cap becomes one with the new SIGMA Art line.
5. SIGMA USB DOCK for customization and fine-tuning
Ā° SIGMA USB DOCK for SIGMA GLOBAL VISION lenses (sold separately)
With the SIGMA USB DOCK accessory, it is possible to update the lens firmware, adjust back focus, and make other adjustments. Just insert the lens into the SIGMA USB DOCK, connect it to a computer with the SIGMA Optimization Pro program, and proceed with the desired customizations.
6. SIGMA GLOBAL VISION lenses set a benchmark for image quality
High-quality design features In our new product lines, the lens cap and AF/MF switches have been completely redesigned to improve usability. To ensure maximum functionality, the internal parts make extensive use of metal and TSC* (Thermally Stable Composite), a synthetic product very compatible with metal parts. The lens barrel is engraved with the construction date, facilitating identification.
TSC has a thermal expansion coefficient similar to that of aluminum. TSC components deform less and make the lens a very precise construction. Compared to polycarbonate with 20% glass fibers, the most commonly used material, TSC offers about 70% higher elasticity. Compared to polycarbonate with 30% glass, it is about 25% more elastic. Ā° SIGMA proprietary MTF āA1ā measurement system
We used a traditional sensor-based system to measure MTF (Modulation Transfer Function). Then we developed our proprietary measurement system (A1)* that uses the 46-megapixel direct image Foveon sensor. High frequencies, previously undetectable, are now visible, improving our quality controls. Each SIGMA 20mm F1.4 DG HSM/Art lens is controlled using the A1 system before being marketed.
